WASHINGTON – Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) today voted in support of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. This bipartisan legislation, which passed out of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce by a vote of 50-0, aims to protect Americans and prevent foreign adversaries, such as China, Iran, North Korea, or Russia, from targeting, surveilling, and manipulating the American people through online applications.
The bill does not outright ban TikTok but requires that TikTok separate itself from control by the Chinese Communist Party to continue operating in the United States. Congressman Luttrell emphasized the importance of this legislation in enhancing national security, stating, "Cybersecurity has become a central issue of our national security, as our adversaries seek to gain any advantage they can over America, and applications like TikTok that are controlled by the CCP are maliciously exploiting Americans for their gain."
Luttrell further highlighted the significance of the bipartisan support for the bill, noting, “This bipartisan legislation passed in the House today will strengthen our national security and prevent Americans from being targeted and surveilled by foreign adversaries.” The vote of 50-0 in favor of the legislation demonstrates a unified effort to safeguard American citizens from potential threats posed by foreign-controlled applications.
