Congressman Morgan Luttrell, a Republican from Texas, has introduced the Syria Terrorism Threat Assessment Act. This legislation mandates the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to evaluate threats posed by individuals in Syria who have connections with Foreign Terrorist Organizations or Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organizations. The bill recently passed through the House Homeland Security Committee’s Counterterrorism and Intelligence Subcommittee mark-up.

Congressman Lou Correa, a Democrat from California, co-led efforts to introduce and advance the Syria Terrorism Threat Assessment Act. Congressman Luttrell emphasized the importance of this legislation by stating, "The United States cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the growing terrorist threats in Syria. My legislation...ensures that DHS is actively identifying and assessing the risks posed by individuals with ties to terrorist organizations before they can threaten our homeland."

Congressman Correa added, "Border security doesn’t begin or end at the border. Across the globe, individuals with ties to terrorist organizations pose threats to our homeland that can't be downplayed." He expressed optimism about future bipartisan support as he stated, "This legislation passing out of Committee today is a positive step towards securing our homeland."
