Congressman Morgan Luttrell and Congressman Chris Deluzio have introduced the Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act in an effort to combat human trafficking. Luttrell emphasized the importance of the legislation, stating, “Human trafficking affects communities across our country, and Houston, Texas is currently the top city in America for these horrific crimes. Tragically, the problem is only getting worse as cartels exploit our open border.” Deluzio echoed this sentiment, expressing his commitment to making communities safer through the implementation of federal resources.

The legislation has garnered support from various representatives, including Rep. McCaul who highlighted the significance of providing law enforcement with the necessary resources to combat modern-day slavery. Rep. Wagner emphasized the importance of cooperation between federal, state, and local partners in the fight against human trafficking, stating, “At a time when perpetrators of this vile crime are becoming increasingly more sophisticated in their methods, our law enforcement must use every tool at their disposal to protect victims and bring their traffickers to justice.”

Ellzey also voiced his support for the legislation, stressing the need to address the exploitation of women and children. He stated, “The Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act recognizes that we cannot tolerate the exploitation of women and children anymore and helps ensure that law enforcement is equipped to deal with this problem head-on.” Additionally, Chavez-DeRemer emphasized the importance of expanding federal grant opportunities to provide law enforcement officials with the resources needed to disrupt trafficking networks and keep communities safe.

Rep. Mace highlighted the importance of implementing real solutions to reduce demand for human trafficking, especially in regions like the Lowcountry. She stated, “Our commitment lies in implementing real solutions to reduce demand for these egregious violations of human rights, especially during a time when the open southern border serves as a lucrative channel for this kind of heinous and illicit activity.”

This legislation aims to address human trafficking by adding a new category to the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The program currently provides critical funding to support various program areas related to criminal justice. With the support of multiple representatives, including Michael McCaul, Ann Wagner, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and others, the Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act seeks to equip law enforcement with the necessary tools to combat human trafficking effectively.
