WASHINGTON – Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX), along with 16 of his colleagues, sent a letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary McDonough calling for the immediate return of a cross to its original display in the Austin, Texas VA clinic, after it was removed following a complaint from the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

“It is nearly unfathomable that the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System acted with such hasty disregard in removing a cross in the Austin, Texas VA clinic,” said Congressman Morgan Luttrell. “I sincerely hope that Secretary McDonough will reverse course and return the cross to its display out of respect for the First Amendment protection of our cherished religious freedom and traditions.”

The Members wrote in part, “From the Distinguished Service Cross established in 1918[1] to the Air Force Cross in 1960,[2] our country has used the symbol of the cross to honor U.S. military personnel for over a century. Arlington National Cemetery is also home to at least two beloved cross memorials to the nation’s fallen:  the Argonne Cross, dedicated in 1923,[3] and the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice, dedicated in 1927.[4] If a cross can adorn the uniforms of the most heroic among us and can stand on the hallowed grounds of Arlington it certainly should be welcomed and honored at the VA clinic in Austin.”
