WASHINGTON — Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) co-signed a letter with 75 of his House Republican colleagues to DHS Secretary Mayorkas and HHS Secretary Becerra following reports that HHS has been unable to contact 85,000 child migrants, leaving many to be forced into child labor.
“The border crisis is not a stand-alone crisis. It has created a new catastrophe in every direction,” said Congressman Luttrell. “Unaccompanied migrant children are crossing our border, and Joe Biden’s failed policies aren’t leading them to the American Dream. Instead, these children are released with no follow-up and are facing forced labor, sex trafficking, and abuse. The policies of the Biden Administration are failing everyone. Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden not only need to address the ongoing exploitation and lack of contact with minors, but also secure our southern border and ensure people seeking to come to our great country are going through the proper, legal channels.”

The New York Times has reported a number of times on the surge in child exploitation because of the open border. In February, the outlet reported on a series of stories from people who have seen the exploitation and experienced it firsthand. In April, the NYT reported on HHS’ knowledge of the issue and their failure to do anything about it.
To address the ongoing border crisis, Committee on Homeland Security Republicans last week passed the Border Reinforcement Act of 2023 out of committee. The full House of Representatives is currently scheduled to vote on this legislation when Members return to Washington, D.C. next week.
