Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.

Cypress Woods High School 2020 graduate Cody Marxhausen was selected to receive the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) Superintendent’s Award for his photo titled A Loving Embrace.

Marxhausen’s photo is part of his photography portfolio titled The Beauty of Animals Frozen in Time. The collection of photos was entered into the Scholastic Art & Writing regional competition hosted through HCDE. Each year, HCDE selects one photo for the Superintendent’s Award and Marxhausen’s photo was chosen as this year’s winner out of 5,000 submissions.

“I am honored to have been Cody’s photography teacher while he was a student at Cypress Woods,” said Tina Fox, Cypress Woods photography teacher. “For three years I had the opportunity to work with Cody and for three years I witnessed his growth as a photographer and a student. Cody is among the best of all students I have had the fortune of teaching mostly because he always remained teachable and was willing to bring that extra degree of effort. I am so proud of this honor he received. It validates his dedication, creativity and hard work.”

HCDE bought Marxhausen’s photo for $250 and it’s being displayed in the HCDE Trustee’s Scholastic Art Gallery. Marxhausen was scheduled to be honored at the Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Ceremony in downtown Houston in March, but the event was canceled due to COVID-19.

“Cody was the only student from our region selected to receive the Harris County Department of Education Superintendent’s Award out of more than 5,000 student art submissions,” said Lee Carrier, CFISD visual arts coordinator. “His achievement provides a great example of how art students can turn passion into profit.”
