Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District issued the following announcement on Sept. 30.

Farney Elementary School first grade teacher Dana Leasure was honored as a First Community Credit Union (FCCU) Texans Stars in the Classroom winner on Sept. 29.

Leasure, who was nominated for the award by Goodson Middle School sixth grade student Makenna Mickelson, earned a surprise from Houston Texans linebacker Brennan Scarlett via Zoom. Scarlett talked with Leasure and her students and answered questions. In addition to the surprise visit, Leasure also received a custom painted football, a $500 donation to the district in her name, a $200 H-E-B gift card, a $100 Uber Eats voucher and a Stars in the Classroom tote bag and water bottle.

“What a special honor this is,” Leasure said. “Makenna once said to me, ‘I may not remember everything you said, but I will always remember how special you made me feel.’ Well, what she didn’t realize is that she is the one who made me feel special. Knowing that I made an impact on a student makes my heart happy. Receiving this honor reminded me that teachers do make a difference. I am beyond blessed.”

Each year, FCCU teams up with the Houston Texans to help students thank 10 exceptional Houston-area teachers. Students can nominate teachers who have made an impact on them to show their appreciation.

Goodson Middle School sixth grade student Makenna Mickelson, left, pictured with Rich Dixon, Goodson principal, nominated Leasure for the honor. Mickelson received a signed Texans football for nominating Leasure.

“When FCCU called me to share that Mrs. Leasure had been selected to receive the Stars in the Classroom award, I knew she was deserving,” said Tricia Reilly, Farney principal. “I was so excited to be involved in pulling off the big surprise announcement. Mrs. Leasure goes above and beyond to build relationships with her students and their families. She has been at Farney since the doors opened 20 years ago. We feel honored and blessed that she chooses to work at Farney!”
