Providing resources to local small businesses is among numerous actions the Montgomery City Council plans to take to help the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even if we have to spend some money to help our businesses or if there are grants available, ... that’s something we could look at,” Council Member Rebecca Huss said during a virtual council meeting, according to the Community Impact Newspaper. ”I’d love to see the city be more aggressive with providing services.”

Council member John Champagne said the city needs to be careful with its money and must be prepared to cut unnecessary spending as the city is expected to see a large decrease in sales tax revenue due to the economic shutdown.

“We need to be very mindful of the fact that our revenue is going to be affected, and we need to be as smart as we can be utilizing our personnel,” Champagne said.

Champagne advocated for individuals to also be involved in the assistance efforts.

“There’s an individual effort that has to be made,” he said. “If the city can do something, great. But we can’t hold everyone’s hand.”
