Congressman Pete Sessions of Texas’ 17th District is set to speak on the House floor in support of HR 5125, known as the District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Reform Act of 2025. The bill aims to improve the DC court system by making the judicial nominations process more efficient, reducing case backlogs, and ensuring that justice is delivered in a timely manner.
According to Sessions, the current structure of the DC Judicial Nomination Commission puts politics ahead of justice. He argues this leads to delays that negatively impact both residents and visitors in Washington, DC. HR 5125 seeks to address these issues by removing what Sessions describes as bureaucratic obstacles so that courts can function effectively.
Sessions stated, “As the son of a federal judge, I have a great respect for the judiciary and the process Constitutionally ordained to ensure fairness in our courts. Empowering the courts to convict criminals is essential for improving public safety in our beautiful capital city. Importantly, my bill does not remove any sitting judges but simply streamlines the process for future nominations. The President must be able to quickly nominate judges to fill vacancies that allow criminals to escape justice. We must prioritize actions that will allow the court system to do its job and go after repeat offenders and other criminals that make DC unsafe.”
Sessions has represented Texas’ 17th Congressional District since winning election in 2020. In recent general elections, he defeated Rick Kennedy in 2020 with nearly 56% of the vote, Mary Jo Woods in 2022 with about 66%, and Mark Lorenzen in 2024 with over 66%.
